Eduard Stiefel (1875-1968): Female Nude in the Studio - 1903

*
Several weeks ago I found a beautiful Male nude listed in an auction catalog by the Swiss Artist Eduard Stiefel (1875-1968) and posted it for you (See the last illustration below). This afternoon while browsing eBay Austria I found another example of his work, this time an intaglio print of a female nude in a studio setting. I love these nudes in the studio setting. This print is a fine example of Stiefel's artistic abilities. In the hands of a capable restoration specialist, that foxing on the print can be removed.

Do You See what I See? Or Is My Mind In The Gutter?

*
I stumbled on this little gem this morning on eBay Austria. I had to pick myself up off the floor to stop laughing. At first I thought it was some kind of mistake, given that overt phallic design in the cut of the mat, then I read the description and looked closely at the content of the composition. That is the Blessed Virgin standing there, No?. How would you like to have been a 19th century husband unveiling this to your household after having taken this nice watercolor study of a monument to the Emperor and fallen soldiers by your favorite artist to the picture gallery for framing and having this come home? I will bet the housemaids were giggling every time they walked past that phallic shape in the master's bedroom.

*
Several of the European Auction Houses are currently listing works featuring the nude ephebe (nude boy) in their auction catalogs. I thought I would list them separately because they tend to get lost in some of the larger posts of academic nudes that I post. Enjoy.

Karoly Ferenczy (1862-1917): Male Youth Astride a Horse

*
Virag Judit Galeria, Budapest, HU has listed this beautiful work by Karoly Ferenczy (1862-1917) in their current auction catalog. I have featured Ferenczy in a previous posting and if you would like to see the post, just search the artist's name in the search slot above and it should pop up. The drawing stylistic similarities between the figure on the horse and the academic male nude in my collection a quite similar.

Christian Rohlfs (1849-1938): Nude Boy Leaning on a Table - 1907

*
Kunst-und-Auktionshaus Peter Karbstein, Dusseldorf, DE has recently listed a nude by the German Expressionist artist Christian Rohlfs (1849-1938) in their current catalog. Christian Rohlfs was a well known German painter and print maker who was active during the later 19th and early 20th centuries. According to his biography, he took up painting as a teenager while convalescing from an infection which ultimately cost him his leg. He began his formal studies in Weimar in 1870. His first painting examples were large-scale landscapes and he successively worked through academic, naturalist, Impressionist, and Neo-Impressionist styles. In 1901 he left Weimar for Hagen at the urging of art collector Karl Ernst Osthaus, who offered him a studio in the modern art museum he was establishing there. Through his exposure to the avant-garde movement, including meeting Edvard Munch in 1904 and Emil Nolde in 1905, seeing Van Gough's choppy brushstrokes and vibrant colors, his work moved into its final Expressionist phase. By the age of sixty, he had 185 prints in his oeuvre of masterworks. Aside from a few lithographs, he worked exclusively in woodcut and linoleum cut mediums. In 1937 the Nazis expelled him from the Prussian Academy of Arts and condemned his works as "degenerate." Some 412 examples of his works were ultimately removed from public collections.

Bolland and Marotz Hanseatisches Auktionshaus in Bremen, DE has listed another nude by the German artist Eric Kips (1869-1945). The opening bid is Euro 1,500.00 for the painting. It will be interesting to see if it brings any action at that price.

August H. Volker (1876-?): Standing Male Nude - 1905

*
I bought this nice male nude study by the German artist August H. Volker (1876-?) this morning from a dealer in Germany. I am always looking for differing poses in the models and I do not have one with this particular pose in my collection. Volker studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. From there, he continued his studies in Berlin at the Art School, Museum of Decorative Arts and the Academy of Fine Arts in Charlottenburg. He devoted most of his artistic to the Graphic arts and in 1904 became a member of the Association of German Illustrators. He also devoted much of his time to treatises on art education.

Max Slevogt (1868-1932): Die Wandmalereien in Neu-Cladow - ca. 1920

*

Max Slevogt (1868-1932): Self-Portrait with Glasses - 1894

Max Slevogt (1868-1932).. Wrestling School - 1893

*
One of my favorite sellers on eBay France has listed a copy of the 1920 edition of prints in Max Slevogt's  "Die Wandmalereinen in Neu-Cladow." The prints of his mural paintings are presented in a limited edition signed volume at quite a reasonable price, if you are interested. The first thing that really struck me about these prints was that square format. During those "make a frame, stretch and prime the canvas" days at University, the square format was one of my favorite formats for a painting. You do not see the square format as often as you should. I have used a Hasselblad camera over the years and the Hasselblad is a square format camera and that square really grows on you so naturally the it followed me into my painting classes. Max Slevogt (1868-1932) was a well known German Impressionist painter, printmaker, and commercial illustrator. He initially planned on a career in music but switched to painting and studied at the Akademie der Bildenden Kunste in Munich in 1885. He was greatly influenced by the Impressionistic movement of the time and later spent a term at the Academie Julian in Paris. He later traveled to Italy with his artist friend, Robert Breyer (1866-1941) and started work as an illustrator upon his return to Munich. His first exhibition was at the newly founded Munich Secession in 1893 where he exhibited his painting "Wrestling School." Apparently his composition caused a stir amongst the judges who had convinced themselves that the painting was "immoral" since it depicted naked men entwined on the floor. (Horrors! Somebody had their mind in the gutter)(Illustration above). In the following years Slevogt's work appeared "harsh" and "non-academic" to the straight-laced conservative art critics of late 19th century Munich. I really love the point of view in many of the nudes. I think I see Hebe down there somewhere with her peacocks.
