Robert Wessinger (1825-1894): Anatomical Studies - Mid-19th Century

Winterberg Auktion, Heidelberg, DE has listed two beautiful anatomical studies by the German artist Robert Wessinger (1825-1894). Robert Wessinger is a well listed German artist who was active during the mid to late 19th century. He started his training at the Munich Art Academy in 1847. He was also a member of the Wurttembergische Kunstverein in Rome from 1851-1852. He was later active in Stuttgart and Darmstadt. Observation and translation from brain to hand is the name of the game in studies like these. If you look carefully you can see the blue-green of the veins in the models arm, just under that delicate translucent skin. The German description by the auction house describes the work as "Oelstudie Uber Bleistift auf Leinwand" (Oil study over pencil on canvas).

Art in a Most Unusual Place: US One Dollar Gold Piece - 1915 San Francisco Panama-Pacific Exposition

Last week I received a small package in the mail which contained a nice little surprise, a US one dollar gold coin. I was browsing through a book on US Coins several weeks ago and I stumbled upon Charles Keck's design for the 1915 San Francisco Panama-Pacific Exposition One Dollar Gold Piece. It depicted the profile of a Laborer on the front and two swimming dolphins on the reverse. It reminded me so much of the Austrian bronze reliefs of a worker (above) I posted several months ago that I decided to add an example of this scarce gold coin to my collection. Charles Keck (1875-1951) was a very well known American sculptor who studied at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League in New York with Philip Martiny, and guess what? It is no wonder I was so enamoured with that coin, Keck studied under another great master of American sculpture, Augustus Saint-Gaudens from 1893 to 1898. Keck is best known for his architectural and monumental sculptures. The edition is limited to around fifteen thousand examples of the coin currently in existence. There were about twice that many minted but visitors to the Panama-Pacific Exposition in 1915 San Francisco balked at paying two dollars for a one dollar coin, so the San Francisco Mint took most of the edition back and melted them down. Such is the mystery of the Force. If you are ever in Cornish, New Hampshire be sure to stop in and tour Saint-Gauden's summer home and studio. It is well worth the visit.

Franz Theodor Grosse (1829-1891): Nude Ephebe

Karl & Faber Kunstauktionen, Munich, DE recently listed a beautiful study of a nude ephebe by 19th century German artist Franz Theodor Grosse (1829-1891). Theodor Grosse was a German historical and portrait painter and sculptor. He studied at the Dresden Academy under Eduard Bendemann (1811-1889). Because of his fine work he was awarded a traveling scholarship and spent several years in Italy. After he returned to Germany, he decorated the eastern loggia of the Leipzig Museum. In 1867 he became an instructor at the Dresden Academy.

Marcel Paul Meys (Active 1880-1901): Pastoral Scene - Study - Oils on Board - In Arcadia

A seller on eBay France has recently listed this nice idyllic, pastoral study titled "In Arcadia" by the seller. It is by Marcel Paul Meys, who was active from 1880 to 1901. He specialized in landscapes, Orientalist works, and female nude figurative studies. He studied under Puvis de Chauvannes and Jules Elie Delaunay. Although a simple oils on artist board study, it still shows an accomplished, classically trained hand and a fine sense of color and paint application.

I have a good sense of humor and I love a good laugh and this work is really intellectually challenging. Auktionshaus OWL, Bielefeld, DE has listed this contemporary Russian painting by I. Prisjazny (?) titled Kynocephale in their current catalog. Addendum (April 30): As usual, I try to read through these posts from time to time to correct errors in logic, spelling, and whatever else I see out of whack, and as I was reading through what I wrote about that painting below, glancing down at the overall composition, trying to see more hidden erotic meaning in it, something that I had not seen before leaped off the page at me. Take a careful look at the overall composition of those four boys and then ask yourself what kind of hidden erotic image lies within that composition? If that composition is not phallic, I will eat my jammies. The outline of the male reproductive equipment is right there in that composition to titilate the viewer. I am really surprised it took me so long to see it. It is so obvious if you just look...... see if you can see the shape I am referring to. (hint.. the standing boy is the erect phallus and the boys sitting at his feet become the testes, that red blanket becomes the pubic area). The artist certainly had a sense of humor.

Historia Auktionshaus, Berlin, DE has listed this Richard Maguet painting (directly below) in their current catalog. When I first spotted it in the listings, I laughed out loud. I could not help it. Don't get me wrong, the artistic skills of the artist are not in question, but the subject matter just cracked me up. It immediately reminded me of Manet's "Le Dejeuner Sur L'Herbe." (Posted above... I always wondered what the heck was going on in that painting and still look forward to my first picnic where everyone takes their clothes off). As I scanned the context of the figures, I noticed that empty bottle of wine and then my attention shifted to the apparent age of the "young men," boys in actuality, and the somewhat obvious sexuality of the entire voyeuristic situation. The artist has intentionally put the observer into the position of being a blatant voyeur, wanting you to appreciate his obvious adoration of that half-nude young man stripping down to his undergarments. Was the object here to shock? Or is it simply an invitation to admire that graceful, half nude, somewhat feminized boy? I know each and every one of you have been relaxing on the beach and had some object of your deepest desire shed his or her clothes within your captured gaze. In this case the artist has memorialized his own vision, an instant in memory when beauty shined brightly and just had to be captured forever.
