Ferdinand Schmutzer (1870-1928) was a prominent Austrian printmaker-artist who studied art in Vienna under Heinrich Kuhn (1866-1944) and William Unger (1837-1932). He finished his art education in Paris and in Holland. Around the turn of the 20th century he gained a strong reputation throughout Europe for his delicate and perceptive studies of rural life. Later in his career he held the influential post of Professor of Etching at the Vienna Academy. Both his art and his theories influenced many fine etchers of the 1920's and 1930's. His works took Gold Medals at both the Dresden and Vienna Expositions. This etching came from a Gallery in Germany several years ago and is a beautiful example of his work.
