Unknown 19th Century French Artist: Young Military Cadet - 1850

A Seller on eBay France posted this nice mid-19th century drawing of a young military cadet. It is signed but the signature is illegible. It is a very nice line drawing, showing great control of that pencil point by a mid-19th century artist.

Hans August Zierngible (1864-1906): Portrait of a Gypsy - 1884

*
This beautiful drawing popped up on eBay Austria this morning. I know it is a bit off topic but it really is a brilliant example of a skilled artist's ability to make detailed observation, all courtsey of some fine 19th century Academy training. Take out your gray scales folks and see how many shades of gray you can see in this beautiful drawing. Hans August Zierngible (1864-1906) trained at the Munich Academy during the late 19th century.

Vienna Secessionist Bronze Relief: Ballspielender Knabe - Nude Boy Playing With A Ball....Ca. 1910 - Circle of Egon Schiele

*
A few minutes ago on eBay Austria, I picked up this nice Vienna Secessionist Bronze relief of a nude boy playing with a ball. The seller in Vienna listed it as "circle of Egon Schiele," although how he came to that conclusion I am not completely sure, perhaps wishful thinking because it is not signed. When I first saw the listing on eBay Austria I was sure I had seen that exact same motif in another medium but my brain cells are getting too spread apart at this age for me to make the connection right now. It reminds me of a Juaquin Sorolla drawing? I will keep working on where I have seen this figure before. The information is in there somewhere. The selling price was somewhat low in my opinion because the seller had gotten so wrapped up in trying to associate the work with Egon Schiele in his brief listing, that he neglected to throw in some very important (in my opinion) descriptive terms that would have pulled in far more interest in an eBay search, both in English and the Austrian language (according to that lost-without-his-teleprompter, illiterate-jackass Barak Hussein Obama, there is an Austrian Language), which used to be German to the rest of us, that is until redefined by Obama the Country Club Marxist-in-Chief. (Sounds of me spitting on the floor should be added here!). Any who, it is a nice unsigned bronze that is headed to my collection.

Recommended Blogspot: Peintures des Musees de France

If you have not paid a visit to Blogspot - Peintures des Musees de France recently (http://notesdemusees.blogspot.com/), then you are missing out on some very educational and interesting tours of some little known and not so famous Art Museums in France. One of his latest visits was to the "Le Cap d'Agde: Le Musee de L'Ephebe d'Archeologie Sous-Marine." (The Museum of the Ephebe and Underwater Archaeology) (See illustrations below). If your high school French is a bit outdated, don't worry, simply cut and paste the text into Google Translate and enjoy the commentary in your native tongue. This is probably one of the most informative and interesting Art blogs on the net, so pay him a visit and see some of the hidden art treasures of France.

Leon Lepeltier (1877-1960): Standing Male Nude - Drawing From The Antique

*
Leon Lepeltier at work...

Lepeltier (#26)

Atelier des Beaux-Arts de Paris in 1896

------------------

I just picked up this very nice example of a late 19th century student drawing from the antique. I missed an earlier male nude by the same artist but managed to grab this one for less than forty dollars US. Quite a bargain if I must say. Leon Lepeltier (1877-1960) is a well listed French artist who studied along with some big name French artists at the Atelier des Beaux-Arts de Paris such as Henri Matisse, Georges Roualt, and Albert Marquet at the end of the 19th century. He was a painter of architecture and interiors. During the latter part of his life he worked as a conservator for several French National Museums. He was a pupil of Gustave Moreau, Francois Flameng, Francois Morel and Cormon. He attended the studio of Gustave Moreau in 1895 and this drawing is from that period. In the class photograph above, Lepeltier is number 26. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Francais where his works took Honorable Mention in 1899 and in 1900 at the ocassion of the l'Exposition Universelle, Paris.

Early 20th Century German Wine Advertisement: Rohrendorfer Teufele

*
This morning a seller on eBay Austria listed this fun piece. It is an original oil painting for a German Winery from the early part of the 20th century. What caught my attention was the subject matter, artist's use of color, and that competently applied, beautiful thick brushwork. Being a painter myself, brushwork and the convincing use of color always attracts my attention. Enjoy.
