Recommended Blog Spot: Peintures des Musées de France

*
I wanted to take a few minutes and recommend one of my favorite Blog sites again. If you love art the way I do then "Peintures des Musees de France" (http://notesdemusees.blogspot.com/) is one Blog you would want to follow religiously because you get a comprehensive tour of some of the most "missed" art museums and collections of beauty in all of France. The author of the Blog gives you a first hand tour of off the beaten tourist path of not so well know art collections in France. The blog is in French but with Google Translate that should not be a problem if you do not know the language. Pay this wonderful Blog a visit and I am sure you will return time and time again.

Charles Cousin (1807-1887): Academic Male Nude - 1867

*
This beautiful academic study of male nude is currently running on eBay France. It is by the famous French artist Charles Cousin (1807-1887). It is signed and dates from 1867. I love the way Cousin has treated the light and the way it falls on the model from the upper right. Really a beautiful example of 19th century academic painting skills. I am certain the bidding will get well into the thousands of euros.

Addendum (2/28/2013): Well the hammer fell and the end bid on this painting was 2.049,00 Euros (US $2,681.93)...

Monnogrammist "K.F" : Nude Boy - Wood Carving - Ca. 1910-20

*
Now here is a small artwork in a medium you just do not see every day of the week: a standing figure of a nude boy carved in wood. Of course you see the old church figures of putti from the 17th and 18th centuries but I can't recall seeing a bronze-like figure like this in turned wood. The obviously accomplished artist-sculptor only graced us with his initials "K.F." so he or she is lost to history but his or her talent is preserved in this small carving. The description on the eBay site indicates a 1910-1920 time period for the execution of the work. It measures 31cms in height (slightly over 12 inches).

Eric Wagner (?): Female Nudes (Intaglio Prints)

*
This series of intaglio print studies of  female models (two nude and two clothed) popped up on one of the European eBay auction sites last week. The artist is listed as Eric Wagner (?). Unfortunately, I could find no biographic information on the artist but they do date from the first quarter of the 20th century. Very nicely executed figural studies in my favorite medium, the print.

Unknown European School: Nude Boy Reclining (Ca. 1900)

*
An auction house in Germany has listed this nice study of a nude boy in their current catalog. Unfortunately the artist is unknown because the signature is illegible. You have to laugh at an artist who has such control over his color palette yet can't sign a painting in a way to preserve his identity for posterity. A close inspection of the surface indicates it is in dire need of some preservation expertise. Still a nice painting. It dates from around 1900.

Alfred Boucher (1850-1934): Au But (To The Goal) - Bronze ca. 1905

  Portrait of the Artist (above)
          -----------------------------------------------------------
I finally got the editor for this blog working properly on the Windows based PC where I store all my images and as I was browsing the remainder of images I have for January I ran across a photograph of Alfred Boucher's sculpture "Au But." A seller in Monaco had it listed in the off eBay "small sales" section of eBay France and I contacted him regarding the work. Unfortunately, I thought the conditions he imposed were taking me somewhere with my money that I didn't want to go, so I passed on the buy. Other than a copy of his passport there were no guarantees shipment would actually happen. I dare say I try my best to minimize risk in buying but I will not walk into a buy with no guarantees at all. He did send this nice illustration of the bronze he had and I thought I would post it. This is probably one of my favorite works featuring the male form.

Alfred Boucher (1850-1934) studied under the sculptor Joseph Marius Ramus. He took the Grand Prix du Salon in 1881. He eventually settled in Florence, Italy and became the favorite of royals. Philanthropic and generous he later founded the studio La Ruche in Montparnassee in 1902 to help struggling young artists. He earned the Grand Prix de Sculpture de l'Exposition Universelle in 1900.
